Little
Zion Cemetery Inscriptions
Clarke County, Mississippi
(African-American)
Photographed February 2005
by Matt Dillon
Little Zion Cemetery is located in a 75m by 80m forest clearing north of the city of Quitman, in the northwestern portion of Clarke County, Mississippi. From downtown Quitman, drive north on Federal Highway 45 for 1 mile to the intersection of State Highway 513. Head northwest (left) on 513 and travel 4.9 miles to County Road 160 (The road is marked with a faded sign). Turn right on County road 160 for .1 mile. At the Little Zion Methodist Church, turn right onto County Road 161. Travel 1.3 miles south until the road ends. Little Zion Cemetery lies at the end of the road. The cemetery is commercially active and burials continue to be made there. The photo at right was taken within the cemetery looking West. Cemetery coordinates are: 32°06’15”N, 088°44’12”W.
I
have shown dates in the DDMMMYYYY format for easier reading.
The (double marker) note means two separate headstones with surname
between resting on a double base. The
(double base) means two separate headstones (with full names) resting on a
double base. Row numbers were
determined as best I could using the cemetery layout and may not necessarily
agree with any other compilation (if any) or official cemetery or church
records. Abbreviations used here
are as follows: BB = Brick Border; CB = Concrete Border; (CS) = Concrete Slab;
DM = Double Marker; DBS = Double Base; (FHM) = Funeral Home Marker; FM = Foot
Marker; FS = Foot Stone; GB = Granite Border; GS = Granite Slab; (SM) = Stone
Marker; (GLV) = Ground Level Vault.
Rows were numbered from East to West; graves enumerated from left to right (South to North). Rows with only a few graves were counted as full rows as the cemetery is still active. I have tried diligently to copy all inscriptions accurately; however there is no guarantee that this work is 100% correct. If anyone sees an obvious error, please do not hesitate to let me know.
